37 Dead After Passenger Bus Falls 650 Feet into a Ravine Following Crash with Pickup Truck on ‘Rugged’ Curve

At least 37 people have reportedly died and multiple others are injured after a passenger bus fell into a ravine in Peru.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, Nov. 12, when the bus crashed into another vehicle on the Pan-American Highway in Arequipa, according to the Associated Press and the BBC.

The bus reportedly hit a truck on a curve before going off the road and falling over 650 feet to the banks of the Ocoña river, the health manager of the Arequipa region, Walther Oporto, told local radio RPP, per the AP.

According to the BBC, the fatal incident saw the vehicles crash in a head-on collision in early hours of Wednesday on a “rugged” section of the highway.

Local media outlets reported that the bus, which had been traveling from Chala to the city of Arequipa, was carrying a total of 60 passengers, per the BBC.

While both drivers are reported to have survived, Oporto told local outlets that 36 people died at the scene, while another person died from their injuries in the hospital, according to the BBC.

Three minors are also among the 25 injured who are being treated in a local hospital, health officials told RPP, per the outlet. The AP reported that 13 people had been injured.

In a press release, the Camaná Provincial Corporate Criminal Prosecutor’s Office confirmed they were investigating the incident.

“Provincial prosecutors Luis Supo Ramos and Jorge Medina Chávez, along with deputy provincial prosecutor Clisman Ala Gordillo, went to the scene of the accident to oversee the removal and transport of the bodies,” the release read. “The driver of the pickup truck was also detained to determine his responsibility and legal status in the incident.”

“The injured and survivors have been taken to the hospital in Camaná, as well as to the Honorio Delgado and EsSalud health centers in Arequipa, to receive appropriate medical attention,” they added.

Footage shared by the prosecutor’s office captured the wreckage of the bus on the banks at the ravine as emergency responders inspected the site.

A white truck was also seen with severe damage to its front.

The investigation remains ongoing.
